چکیده

Current body animation systems for Interactive Virtual Humans are mostly procedural or key-frame based. Although such methods provide for a high flexibility of the animation system, often it is not possible to create animations that are as realistic as animations obtained using a motion capture system. Simply using motion captured animation segments in stead of key-framed gestures is not a good solution, since virtual human animation systems also specify parameters of gesture that affect the style, such as for example expressing emotions or stressing a part of a speech sequence. In this paper, we describe an animation system that allows for the synthesis of realistic communicative body motions according to an emotional state, while still retaining the flexibility of procedural gesture synthesis systems. These motions are constructed as a blend of idle motions and gesture animations. Based on an animation specified for only a few joints, automatically and in real-time, the dependent joint motions are calculated. Realistic balance shifts adapted from motion capture data are generated on-the-fly, resulting in a fully controllable body animation, adaptable according to individual characteristics and directly playable on different characters at the same time.

Abstract: Nowadays, the animators give life to the fancy characters by making natural movements to organs of cartoon characters. To achieve this goal, movements of living individuals can be applied into cartoon characters. In this paper, a skeletal correspondence finding based method is proposed to transfer movement of a 2D character into a new character, where these two shapes have the same st...

Emotions : the art of communication applied to virtual actors

This thesis contributes to a multi-disciplinary research field aiming to build autonomous virtual actors. Emotions are a very active topic of research in many domains, such as biology, sociology, and neurology, due to their powerful influences on human behaviours. Computer science also takes an interest in emotion to create believable autonomous virtual characters. Much research focuses on mech...

Walk the talk: coordinating gesture with locomotion for conversational characters

Communicative behaviors are a very important aspect of human behavior, and deserve special attention when simulating groups and crowds of virtual pedestrians. Previous approaches have tended to focus on generating believable gestures for individual characters and talker-listener behaviors for static groups. In this paper, we consider the problem of creating rich and varied conversational behavi...
